Effects of Propofol on the ALT and AST Level

Abstract
The effects of propofol on the serum aspartate transaminase(AST) and serum alanine transaminase (ALT) level were investigated. This study was carried out from June 1994 to January 1995 in the 30 operated patients who belonged to ASA class I, II
in
Kon-Kuk Uni-versity Hospital. Anesthesia has been done an follow; following an initial intravenous dose of 2.0mg/Kg of propofol, maintenance dose of 6~12mg/Kg/hr was injected. Serum AST, ALT levels were cheked on before and after propofol
anesthesia.
The results were as follows:
AST levels on the post-propofol anesthesia 3rd, 5th and 9th days were not significanty changed compared to pre-anesthesia value. ALT levels on the post-propofol anesthesia 3rd and 5th days were not significanty changed compared to pre-anesthesia
value.
ALT levels on the post-propofol anesthesia 9th day were significanty decreased compared to pre-anesthesia value, but it was not mean the depression of hepatic function by propofol.
These results suggested that propofol might be a useful anesthetics as a total intravenous anesthesia for the patients who have liver disease.
